The Theo Paphitis Dyslexia Bursary

Thanks to the fantastic support of Theo Paphitis and the Ryman team, a small new round of bursaries is now available. This round of bursaries are aimed at supporting young people, aged 12-21 years old, in the Crewe area from low-income households. Please check eligibility and requirements below before making an application.

Applicants will need to meet the following eligibility criteria in order to apply:

  1. The individual receiving the dyslexia assessment must be aged 12–21.
  2. The individual must reside in the Crewe area (Cheshire) and can upload proof of address with a CW1 or CW2 postcode.
  3. The individual is from a low-income household, supported by documentation, for example (but not limited to), income support, jobseeker’s allowance, child tax credit, or universal credit.
  4. The individual has not previously received a funded dyslexia diagnosis.
  5. The individual has undergone a sight test within the past two years.
  6. The applicant will make a financial contribution towards the assessment at the time of booking confirmation. This will be a minimum of £75.
  7. The individual receiving the bursary has lived in an English-speaking country and regularly spoken English for at least seven years, and can read, write, and spell in English.
  8. The applicant must specify whether they wish the assessment to be conducted by a Specialist Teacher or a Psychologist (guidance is available here):
  9. The individual receiving the assessment must have access to online facilities such as a laptop, desktop computer or tablet in order to conduct the assessment via a video platform.
  10. The applicant consents to being emailed, and completing one pre- and two post-assessment questionnaires (one month and six months after the assessment has taken place), to support the BDA in evaluating the success and impact of the bursary programme.


How to Apply and Next Steps

  • Application Open Date: Applications will open on this page of the BDA website on Monday, 3rd February 2025 and will remain open until we receive 60 eligible applications.
  • Application Process: Applicants will need to complete an online application form and ensure they have the necessary proof of eligibility ready to upload. This includes:
    • Proof of address
    • Proof of low-income status
    • Confirmation that a £75 minimum financial contribution will be paid by the applicant at the time of booking the assessment.
    • Confirmation that the applicant consents to completing one pre- and two post-assessment questionnaires (one month and six months after the assessment has taken place), to support the BDA in evaluating the success and impact of the bursary program.
  • Selection Process: Once applications close, the BDA will randomly select 40 bursary recipients from the pool of 60 applicants who meet all eligibility criteria.
  • Next Steps if Selected: If your application is selected, we will contact you directly with detailed instructions on the next steps.

Further rounds of bursaries will be available later in 2025, thanks to Theo Paphitis and the Ryman team. We are currently unable to confirm the timing or location of the next round of bursaries. However, updates will be shared on this page of our website when details become available.
